Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) Basics
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a widespread sleep disorder in which the airway becomes partially or completely blocked during sleep, resulting in repeated interruptions in breathing. These episodes may cause gasping, choking, or loud snoring, even if you do not recall waking up.
The condition occurs when the throat muscles relax excessively, causing the airway to narrow and airflow to be restricted. As a result, the brain momentarily rouses the body to reopen the airway and restore normal breathing, which repeatedly disrupts the natural sleep cycle. These interruptions can happen hundreds of times each night, significantly affecting sleep quality and overall health.
