- Movements of the chest and abdomen
- Duration of snoring
- Body position during sleep
Understanding Obstructive Sleep Apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep disorder where the airway becomes partially or fully blocked during sleep, leading to repeated breathing interruptions. These episodes can cause gasping, choking, or loud snoring, even if you don’t recall waking.
OSA happens when the throat muscles relax excessively, narrowing the airway and restricting airflow. Each time this occurs, the brain briefly awakens the body to resume breathing, interrupting the natural sleep cycle—sometimes hundreds of times per night.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Home Sleep Test?
- Persistent or loud snoring
- Excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue
- Difficulty focusing or memory issues
- Changes in mood, irritability, or depression
- Morning headaches or a dry mouth upon waking
