Oral cancer is often called a “silent disease” because it can develop without obvious symptoms. It can affect many areas of the mouth, including the lips, cheeks, tongue, gums, and the roof and floor of the mouth. If undetected, oral cancer can spread rapidly and become life-threatening.

The primary risk factors include:

  • Tobacco use, including smoking or chewing
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection
Regardless of the cause, routine screenings are crucial. Each year, thousands of people in the U.S. die from oral cancer, and survivors may face serious side effects, including disfigurement or the spread of cancer to other parts of the body.

Typical Signs and Symptoms of Oral Cancer

Although screenings can catch oral cancer early, it’s important to recognize common warning signs, including:
  • Persistent mouth sores or ulcers that don’t heal
  • Red or white patches inside the mouth
  • Lumps, rough spots, or thickened areas in the oral tissues
  • Numbness or pain in the mouth or lips
  • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or speaking
  • Changes in the way your teeth fit together
